Vic: Residents blockade Yarraville intersection over trucks
Residents who want large trucks out of their streets are blockading an intersectionin Melbourne's inner west.
The Yarraville Residents Traffic Group started their protest meeting on the cornerof Francis Street and Williamstown Road, Yarraville, about 7.15am (AEST).
Group spokesman JOHN WESTBURY says an overnight and weekend curfew, brokered by thestate government, hasn't worked.
Mr WESTBURY says the exemption of fuel tankers from the curfew means residents' fearsof a possible explosion while they're asleep haven't been alleviated.
He says VicRoads figures show more than 8,000 trucks are still using Williamstown Roadeach day and another 4,000 use nearby Somerville Road or Barkly Street in Footscray.
He says there are schools in Somerville Road and child care facilities in Francis Street,so it's not appropriate for high volumes of diesel fumes to be pumped into the air.
